Mama K’s 1,2,3,4 Cake

This was my great grandmother’s favorite standby recipe, the late Nora Eierloh Kendrick. My mother passed it down to me. Mama K told my mother that she would never have a failure with this recipe but always be sure to use four pans. It’s versatile and delicious with so many frostings, especially chocolate butter cream with toasted chopped pecans.

1 cup of butter
2 cups sugar
3 cups flour
2 tsp baking powder
pinch of salt
1 cup milk
1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 350. Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs and cream until a light yellow color. Sift the dry ingredients and add to the cream mixture alternating this and the milk. Add vanilla last. Beat until smooth. pour into 4 greased and floured round layer pans. Bake for 25 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
