bulleit cherries

Let’s face it. Store bought maraschino cherries are a little weird and for a garnish on a cocktail a plain cherry is kind of a bore. That’s why I decided to seek out the very best way to garnish a Manhattan without having to use store bought stuff. These cherries keep forever and the best part is, after the cherries are all gone, you have the makings of a really dangerously delicious cocktail. Yes, you can drink the cherry-spiked booze. I Googled it .

handful of fresh cherries
an old very clean jam jar
Bulliet Rye
1 tsp of sugar (optional)

If you are using sour cherries, you may or may not want to use a little sugar in these. If you do, just dissolve the sugar in a cup of whiskey. A lot of people use bourbon whiskey for these, and I’ve been told you can just use the cheap stuff. But, I’m a purist and one of the best cocktails I’ve had was based on the cherry spiked liquor leftover in the jar when we made these the first time. So, I use the same whiskey I’d use in the cocktail I am making these for. Rinse and dry your cherries and place them in your jar. Cover them with your whiskey and store them in a cool dark place for as long as it takes you to get through them.
